Owners: Ken Gulaian and Kari Heerdt

Ken Gulaian and Kari Heerdt

Hi everyone! We are Kari Heerdt and Ken Gulaian, and as the owners of Round Peak Vineyards, we'd like to introduce ourselves and our team. We met in Cincinnati in 1998 when we both worked for General Electric. We moved to Charlotte, NC in 2000 for a new job opportunity, loved it, and decided North Carolina was where we would stay.

Careers got in the way though, and in 2006 we moved to San Francisco for Kari's work. This proved to be instrumental since it resulted in a lot of time spent enjoying wine in Napa, Sonoma, and especially the Dry Creek Valley. We particularly enjoyed the small family owned wineries.

When we got the chance to return to North Carolina in 2008, again for Kari's work, we jumped at the chance. Ken had already decided it was time to give up the corporate world, and when we found out there was an opportunity to own a winery in North Carolina, we couldn't resist! After visiting, being impressed with the wines, and seeing the spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, we decided to take the challenge.

We are committed to making the best possible wines, and we hope you'll come and experience Round Peak Vineyards, visit some of the numerous North Carolina Wineries, and check out all that the area has to offer!

Founders: George & Susan Little and Janet & Lee Martin

Round Peak Vineyards was started by George and Susan Little and Janet and Lee Martin following their trip to the Napa Valley in 1998. Their dream of owning their own vineyard became a reality when they purchased the 32-acre vineyard site on Round Peak Church Road in 1999 and planted six varieties of grapes on eight acres in 2000. George Little and Lee Martin met as students at Davidson College, graduated in 1964, pursued careers in law and banking and married Susan and Janet, both educators. The two couples became friends when the Martins moved to Winston-Salem in 1983, and they soon discovered a common passion for fine wine.

Our Team

Round Peak has a great team that makes it all happen day to day. While each has a primary responsibility, everyone helps at times with all aspects of the vineyard, winery, and tasting room business. You'll also find that everyone also has knowledge of beer and brewing, and all are involved in our Skull Camp Brewery Operation. Meet the team:

Winemaker: Rachel Lagergren

Rachel began her career in winemaking while attending Surry Community College. There Rachel was fortunate to meet the Yadkin Valley community of grape growers and winemakers who inspired her and shared the craft and science of winemaking. After obtaining a degree in viticulture and enology, Rachel continued learning as an intern for Stanburn Winery and Foggy Ridge Cider and then as assistant winemaker at Chateau Morrisette in Virginia. Joining the RP team fit perfectly into Rachel's plan to surround herself with people who love to make and drink wine. Drink local. Cheers!

Vineyard Manager: Ken

While Ken had zero knowledge of anything vineyard related back when he first got involved with Round Peak, he did successfully grow cactus back as a child. Since becoming involved with the winery, Ken managed to pass all his classes at the Surry Community College Enology & Viticulture program, and now wanders the vineyard daily trying to keep it from becoming a jungle. Good wine begins with good grapes; Ken & the team spend countless hours in the vineyard to ensure we produce the best possible grapes.

Events and Wholesale Manager: Rita Welder

Rita started working for Round Peak part time in the tasting room, but after expressing her interest in event planning, she accepted a full time position to manage weddings, events, and both wine and beer wholesale accounts. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, she has been living in North Carolina for 7 years. She loves getting hands on experience in the winery and brewery, helping out in the vineyard (sometimes), and expanding her knowledge of wine and beer through books - and of course tastings.

Other Key Employees:

Terry, Michelle, Mia, Maulik, Luke, Marcelo, and John

Brewmasters: Jeff Leftwich

Since May 2012 we have been brewing our own beer under our Skull Camp Brewing brand! In May 2014 upscaled from a 1/2 barrel (10 gallon) system to a new 10 barrel (310 gallon) and we moved our brewery operations from the Round Peak winery to a new dedicated brewery building in Elkin, NC (it's about 15 minutes South). Our brewmaster Jeff has created many unique craft brews that can be sampled at the winery, the brewery, and in local outlets. As with our Skull Camp wines, expect a series of quaffable beers with fun names that aren't necessarily any particular style. We rotate our selections on a constant basis...you never know what you'll get to sample when you visit!
